FWD FORGINGS Delivers Premium 20CrMo Rotary Drilling Rig Joints, Earns Top Customer Acclaim

July 16, 2026

FWD FORGINGShas just delivered a batch of forged rotary drilling rig joints to its customer, receiving outstanding feedback.

20CrMo joints are the critical connecting components used when retrofitting spiral drill bits onto rotary drilling rigs or excavators. They serve as the mechanical and hydraulic interface between the drill bit and the excavator’s power head. These joints are essential accessories in construction machinery, widely applied in digging, piling, and drilling operations — including tree pit excavation, utility pole installation, and photovoltaic (PV) mounting pile driving.

How are these high-performance joints manufactured?

Raw Material Selection:Ring forgings typically utilize premium continuous casting billets sourced from leading steel mills such as Laigang, Jianlong, Jigang, and Xingcheng.

Chemical Composition Verification:For each steel grade and heat number, samples undergo spectrometric analysis. Results are cross-checked against the original mill test certificate. Upon confirmation, the material is assigned an in-house serial number, forwarded to the Quality Control Department, and accompanied by a comprehensive quality assurance certificate.

Precision Cutting:Qualified raw materials are transferred to the sawing warehouse per contract order, with contract number and material grade clearly marked post-cutting.

Controlled Heating:Cut materials are moved to the forging stock warehouse. Surface temperature is rigorously controlled (furnace temperature deviation from setpoint kept within ±10°C); uniform heating of ingots/billets is ensured to prevent “hot-cold faces” that could compromise breakdown quality.

Precision Forging:A forging ratio of ≥6 is mandatory. Where insufficient, upsetting is applied with each reduction exceeding 30% of the ingot height (30% upsetting equates to a forging ratio increase of 1.3). Breakdown procedure: lightly press all four sides to remove oxide scale, with each reduction under 100 mm and even feed. Breakdown dimensions are finished size plus 100–200 mm for chamfering or rough rounding (adjustable per equipment capability). Surfaces must remain free of laps, seams, cracks, pits, or double skin — any defects are immediately addressed.

Heat Treatment:Normalizing or annealing is performed according to material-specific requirements.

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT):Rough forgings undergo NDT per contract-specified standards. An NDT report is issued upon completion; non-conforming parts are scrapped and promptly replaced.

Rough Turning:Performed with quenching and tempering allowance; NDT follows rough turning.

Quenching & Tempering (QT):Outsourced to certified specialists.

Final NDT:Comprehensive quality verification.

Warehousing:Secure storage awaiting dispatch.

Shipment:Delivered on schedule, ready for field deployment.
